Charles Randolph-Wright


Charles directed Motown the Musical on Broadway, West End, and the national tour. He most recently directed the new musical Born for This, which he co-wrote with gospel icon BeBe Winans.

Other directing credits include: the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Ruined and Sophisticated Ladies at Arena Stage (where he is an inaugural resident playwright); the 75th anniversary international tour of Porgy and Bess; Love/Life at Lincoln Center (with Brian Stokes Mitchell); the national tour of Guys and Dolls (starring Maurice Hines); They’re Playing Our Song (in Brazil in Portuguese); Blood Knot (featuring music by Tracy Chapman) and the world premieres of Señor Discretion Himself and Akeelah and the Bee.

Charles wrote the plays Blue (starring Phylicia Rashad and Diahann Carroll), The Night Is a Child, Cuttin’ Up, Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends (co-written with Bea Arthur) and his new play Love in Afghanistan.

Charles directed the award winning film Preaching to the Choir, and has written screenplays for HBO, Showtime, Disney and Fox.

His television credits include directing the series Greenleaf, Step Up: High Water, Lincoln Heights, South of Nowhere, the music special America America, the ‘Freestyle’ football commercial for Nike, and producing and writing the Showtime series Linc’s.
