“When I started in this business I didn’t want fame & fortune. I wanted to write some music, make some money and get some girls”- Berry Gordy
Berry Gordy certainly got everything he ever hoped for and more, and now he has an international musical under his belt to add to his phenomenal list of achievements. On Monday 5th October, Gordy joined us in London for the official launch of Motown the Musical, opening at the Shaftesbury Theatre next February. The night, hosted by Lenny Henry revealed an insight into Gordy’s mind, an introduction to some of the creative team (Broadway Producer Kevin McCollum and Director Charles Randolph-Wright) and of course plenty of singing and dancing from our newly announced cast!
The full house of guests were treated to an exclusive interview with the man behind the legendary Motown story and sneak-peek performances including The Temptations My Girl, a Supremes medley and a finale that had everyone Dancing in their seats!
Gordy discussed where his story began, the process of bringing the Motown story to life on stage alongside the rest of the creative team and some of the highlights of his career. He claims he’s “had a love affair with the U.K. since I first came here”, so it’s only fitting that Motown the Musical makes its way over to the West End next year.
Keep an eye out for more from the night including an interview and performances.
